About Birmingham
Attractions in Birmingham
Birmingham Museum of Art
The Birmingham Museum of Art specialises in European decorative arts (especially Wedgwood) and has a good selection of works from Africa and North America. It also has a marvellous photography collection and an impressive three-level sculpture garden the size of a football field.
Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame
The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame celebrates jazz greats like Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington. Exhibits take you on a musical journey from the jazz origins in boogie-woogie to the more arcane experimentation of the modern era. Many of the exhibits are free. There's also a chance to see forums, films and live jazz acts.
16th St Baptist Church
The 16th St Baptist Church was long a centre for the black community in Birmingham, and during the 1950s became a gathering place for civil rights meetings. In September 1963, members of the Ku Klux Klan set off a bomb during a Sunday morning service in the church, killing four girls. Today, the rebuilt church is a house of worship and a memorial.
